Comparing families: does international perspective help?

FAMCHIP Project Conference - Comparing families: does international perspective help?
17-18 Dec 2013
Warsaw School of Economics
Warsaw, Poland

Country‐specific institutional or cultural conditions have been increasingly indicated as important determinants of family‐related behaviors as well as key factorsfor explaining the interrelationship between family‐related choices and individualresources, values or norms. Comparative research has often been launched in the last three decadesin order to better investigate the role of the context for individual behaviors. Has implementing an international comparative perspective brought us closer to understanding family‐related behaviors? What do comparative studies add to country‐specific studies? Which empirical strategy – comparing similar or differentrealities – is more useful to explain the role of the country‐specific context?

This conference is aimed to provide a room for a discussion about the usefulness of comparative research for understanding individual behaviors. We welcome contributions that adopt an international comparative approach. At the end of the conference, a summary and open discussion among participants on pros and cons of conducting comparative research is planned.
