‘Dolls Art’ – the many faces of the art of doll making

‘Dolls Art’ exhibits hundreds of original, fascinating and inspiring works at the Old Jaffa Museum of Antiquities. The exhibition opens a window into the remarkable world of contemporary doll artists, who devote their lives to creating unique figures inspired by fairy tales, children's stories, theater, different historical periods, cultures, peoples and more. Each doll represents an entire world with its own personal story, character and message. Some of them will even cause you to reach out and check whether they have a pulse. The highest level of craftsmanship, perfect control of a variety of techniques and attention to details, turn the ‘Dolls Art’ exhibition into a true masterpiece. Every person, regardless of age and gender, will find immense diversity of the characters that will open your heart and take you on a journey on the wings of imagination.

‘Dolls Art’ displays a wide range of works: classic porcelain dolls, wooden marionettes from puppet theaters, commedia dell'arte dolls, miniature kinetic wooden dolls, illustrated dolls, assemblage, dolls inspired by great artists, dolls inspired by different periods and cultures, leisure, fashion and many others. In addition, the exhibition displays works of animation, drawing, illustration and photography.

The dolls were conceived, planned, created and assembled by contemporary visual artists, graduates of art academies and prestigious awards winners, whose works can be found among the world's finest art collections belonging to presidents and kings, celebrities and important personalities. The high level of finish and an exceptionally theatrical dimension of the works indicate mastery of sculpting, painting, drawing, sewing and design, through a fascinating mix of diverse materials, such as wood, clay, wax, glass, porcelain, papier mâché and more.

‘Dolls Art’ 2014 strives to raise awareness and funds for the ‘One in Nine’ non-profit organization that has been acting on behalf of women with breast cancer and their families since 1994. According to Limor Margolis, the initiator and curator of ‘Dolls Art’: "In the process of research and meetings with the artists, I was often left speechless and strongly wished to be a part of the amazing moment when the doll was created, and reached the real world from the imagination of the artist.

The word "doll" creates a direct association with the concept of a “toy,” which raises the question of what is a work of figurative art and what is a toy? One of my main goals in this exhibition is to illustrate the difference between a toy and a doll as an object of figurative art that was not originally created as children’s toy.

‘Dolls Art’ is a continuation of my research and development of unique exhibitions designed for the whole family, as well as the culturati. I see great importance in creating an exhibition that offers a memorable experience and evokes smiles and thoughts. Old Jaffa is undoubtedly one of the most special places in Israel that offers a rich cultural experience for the whole family." ‘Dolls Art’ creates a magical connection with adults and children alike and offers a cross-generational, enriching experience with educational, social and cultural values. On select dates the exhibition will hold puppet theater performances, workshops, discussion sessions and other activities.
