The international PhD programme in Protein Biotechnology at BOKU Vienna

BioToP offers an inter- and multi-disciplinary research-based doctoral education at the interface of basic and applied science in the field of protein biotechnology.

BioToP provides comprehensive and thorough up-to-date research training in the fields of

• structure-function analysis, engineering and design of proteins,
• protein synthesis, targeting and post-translational modifications
• expression systems and cell factories
• bioinformatics and molecular modelling

Integration of this complementary expertise into a network will foster a translational approach, involving both basic and applied research, with the ultimate goal of rational improvement of industrially relevant protein expression systems for their use in biotechnological processes.

Based on the common research interests as well as on the inter- and multidisciplinary nature of the PhD Programme four main research areas are defined within BioToP:

BioToP is an International PhD Programme of BOKU - University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria.

BOKU has established the Vienna Institute of BioTechnology (VIBT) that integrates the Departments of Applied Genetics and Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Food Sciences and Technology, and Nanobiotechnology, and has a close association with the Department of Material Sciences and Process Engineering. The spectrum of activities ranges from basic research to the development of viable technologies. With its integration of biosciences, engineering sciences, business and management studies the VIBT is designed as a technology-oriented supplement to the pure science-oriented biotechnology centres.

All laboratories of BioToP are located at VIBT within three adjacent buildings, thus allowing regular interactions between all faculty members and students.
