Jews During the Great Patriotic War

This exhibition at the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center occasioned with the 70th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War End will represent not so much the story of collective act of bravery as it will tell about certain people who hasten the victory over fascism. Polina Gelman, an aviatress, the only Jewess-hero of the Soviet Union; Elena Kagan, a military interpreter and writer, she was in the team which looked for Hitler’s body; Alexander Pechersky, an officer of the Red Army, the leader of the only successful revolt in Sobibor extermination camp; Vasily Grossman, a writer and author of the first texts about the Holocaust, and others.

Thanks to the cooperation with the State Archive of the RF, the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, the Russian State Archive of Social-Political History and children and grandchildren of the veterans it became possible to collect great many document materials, among which is the manuscript of Lives and Fortunes by Vasily Grossman, one of the most perceant novels about the Second World War, which allows to better understand the context which became the background for the tragedy of the last century.

Special attention will be paid to the photos made by the photographer-Jews such as Children’s Round Dance in Stalingrad by Emmanuel Evzerkhin and one of the most famous photos, which became the symbol of the victory, Soviet Victory Banner Over Reihstag by Evgeny Khaldey which will be presented in several variants. The exposition will also include the famous Soviet songs of the military period written by the composers-Jews.

The presentation of the new full publication of Gelfund’s Diaries will be held during the exhibition opening, it was prepared by the Research Center of the Jewish Museum. The diary of Vladimir Gelfund, the sergeant and then the lieutenant, contains authentic information about the daily life during the war, mode of life and morals behind the enemy lines and at the front, about humiliations and deep personal feelings. The records of the author when he was working in Germany in 1945-46, his impressions about the German culture, mode of life and morals are of particular interest. The book will be presented by historian Oleg Budnitsky and Vitaly Gelfund – the son of the author of the diary.
