The PhD programme in Economics at the University of Oslo

The PhD programme in Economics aims to give dedicated graduate students a solid training in performing high quality scientific research in economics, making use of the empirical and theoretical techniques that reflect the state of the art in the field. According to a recent ranking of academic institutions based on publications in leading economic journals, the total research output of the Department of Economics at the University of Oslo is the 36th highest in Europe.

Requirements for admission
Master's Degree
For admission to the PhD programme in Economics, applicants must have completed a 2-year Master's degree in Economics or other equivalent courses of education that may be approved as being suitable. Applicants should have a strong background in economics and master the standard tools in mathematics (linear algebra, calculus, optimisation) and statistics (hypothesis testing, estimation).

GRE General Test
The Department will require that candidates with education from an institution outside the European Economic Area/the European Union or Switzerland submit the performance of a GRE General Test. The minimum test scores to be considered for a admission is 660 points on the Quantitative reasoning section and 500 points on the Verbal reasoning section for tests taken before August 2011. For tests taken after August 2011, the minimum test score is 152 points on the Quantitative reasoning section and 153 points on the Verbal reasonin g section. Submitted test results must not be older than five years.

English skills
A good command of English is required of all applicants. International students must document their proficiency in English by taking one of the following internationally recognized tests:
TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language. Applicants must obtain a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 80 (internet-based). The University’s code number for TOEFL is 0756. Please arrange to have your score sent directly to the Department.
IELTS – International English Language Testing Service (academic). Applicants must obtain a minimum score of 6.0.

Funding
