Simone de Beauvoir – Gender Actualization

6th Annual Conference in Gender Studies
The conference titled “Simone de Beauvoir – Gender Actualization” is a joint effort of the Center for Social Sciences, Institute for Gender Studies at Tbilisi State University, and Non-Governmental Union “Women’s Initiative for Equality” and takes place on November 27-28, 2014 at Tbilisi State University.

The Conference will be conducted in the framework of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign that is observed annually from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day). This year’s conference is devoted to the life and work of prominent French feminist and philosopher Simone de Beauvoir (1908 – 1986). The Conference will provide unique opportunity to scholars interested to present original works on ideas and biography of Beauvoir as well as impact of her activities on the development of the feminist theory and movement.

Original works not related directly to Simone de Beauvoir and her activities but supporting actualization of gender as analytical category, the system of concepts and dependencies can also be presented during the conference. Submission Deadline for Abstracts and Application forms is October 24, 2014. The conference languages are Georgian and English with simultaneous translation provided.

Papers and presentations are accepted on issues related to any of the following topics:

Simone de Beauvoir – Life, Work, Importance:

1. Beauvoir’s ideas and their impact on the development of feminist theory and movement;
2. The importance of introduction of Second Sex to Georgian Academic community and beyond;
3. Beauvoir’s biography studies.

Gender actualization in the Georgian context:

1. Gender in family and daily life
2. Gender in the political life of the country
3. Gender, nationalism and religion
4. Gender representation in art and media
5. Gender-based violence
6. Gender identity and sexual orientation
