Intergenerational Transfers and Immigrant Population

International Workshop “Intergenerational Transfers and Immigrant Population”.
Organizer: University of Bologna – Department of Political and Social Science.
11 September 2015
Aula Poeti – Strada Maggiore, 45 – Bologna.

The Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Bologna organizes an international workshop on intergenerational relations among the immigrant population in European countries. The workshop will be held in Bologna, Italy, on September 11th, 2015. First- and second-generation immigrants represent an increasing share of the European population. In the fields of sociology, demography and economics an increasing number of studies is devoted to exploring the consequences, challenges and opportunities related to the resulting transformation of European societies.

However, little empirical research is available on support behaviour among (children of) immigrants and their families and on the consequences of this behaviour for the well-being and life chances of the immigrant population. The effect of parental support on young adults’ life chances is pervasive. As a consequence, family support for second- (or third-) generation immigrants is of paramount relevance for socio-economic integration in the
new society and reducing inequalities in life chances between natives’ and immigrants’ children.

Furthermore, the availability of family care and financial support in old age is a relevant factor to explaining inequality in individuals’ well-being in later life. The few existing studies on the topic suggest that, in general, the way in which most immigrants make transfer decisions and the way in which they decide on
allocations between children are different from those observed among native populations. The workshop will take a broad approach, addressing topics such as the role of the immigration process in shaping family relations; the comparative study of intergenerational relations between native populations and
immigrants from specific origins; the analysis of perceived support obligations and family responsibilities among the immigrant population in Europe. The overall goal is to increase our knowledge about intergenerational transfer processes and about how to go about conducting research on them.
